The filling of plated through vias is not an entirely new process, and has been a necessary step to partially filled vias in circuit boards destined to be tested in vacuum fixtures post-assembly. However, these vias were located outside of SMT pads used for mounting components. More recently, as component density increased and lead pitches became smaller, it became difficult or impossible for designers to find sufficient circuit board real estate for connecting SMT mounting pads to discrete conventional vias. Through Consistent Thermal Profiling
Beaverton, OR, June 21, 2007 /PRNewswire/ -- Two Northwest companies are working closely together to bring higher quality and manufacturing cost reduction through constant and consistent measurement. Axiom Electronics was looking for
an improved way to develop the best thermal profiles for their customer's products, and after an extensive evaluation
program selected the ECD SuperMOLE(r) Gold toolset.
Axiom delivers Class III mission critical flight hardware, spacecraft components, medical products, and other high performance systems in prototype, pilot, and production run quantities to companies creating technologically sophisticated highly reliable commercial, industrial, and government systems.
"Whether we manufacture prototypes or space craft assemblies, we need to ensure that the resulting product meets the most stringent quality and reliability standards. Using the optimal reflow oven profile for each product we build is one of the most critical elements in ensuring long-term reliability and quality. While other manufacturers may use a 'one-size fits all' approach to profiling, Axiom engineers design a dedicated profile for each circuit card assembly we manufacture. Every day we are confronted with new circuit cards of varying sizes and layer counts that have a wide variety of mass distribution on either or both sides of the card, may it be back-to-back high ball-count BGAs with integrated heat spreaders or 0201 passives. We have to have a profiling toolset that can facilitate the development of reflow profiles for Axiom's line-up of reflow ovens, and the solder alloys and flux chemistries that our customers require. We selected the ECD MOLE and tools because it helps us conquer these challenges quickly and accurately." says Bernard Bom, Axiom's Vice-President of Engineering.
Recently, ECD became aware that Axiom used the MOLE on average more than three times per day over the first three months of ownership, and ECD was impressed by the implied commitment to conducting thermal profiling for their contract customers. "A process not measured, is a process not likely in control"... says Grant Peterson, VP of Marketing & Sales at ECD. "Axiom demonstrates through disciplined action, a real interest in knowing that their processes are in control...they measure them frequently, and can prove it, rather than relying on hope or opinion.
